Can I replace just the ceiling light cover without replacing the fixture?
Yes, if the metal fitter, socket, and wiring are sound and you can get a cover that matches that fitter. Replace only the glass or plastic shade. Leave the canopy on the ceiling box. Replace the whole fixture if the socket is browned, the threads are stripped, the wires are brittle, or no cover fits the ring you have.
Replace the cover only when
- The glass is cracked or yellowed and the fitter still holds screws or a finial.
- The lamp still lights and the socket is not discolored.
- You have the fitter diameter and the attachment type written down.
- The new cover clears the bulb by a visible gap all around.
Replace the fixture when
- The center stud spins or the screw holes are wallowed out.
- You see heat marks, melted plastic, or a loose socket.
- The fixture is an integrated LED with a sealed shade and no listed replacement glass.
- You would spend as much hunting glass as a new listed flush mount costs.
How to change the cover
- Turn the breaker off. Confirm the lamp is dark.
- Support the old cover. Remove thumbscrews evenly, turn a twist-lock counterclockwise, or remove the center finial while holding the bowl.
- Seat the new cover fully, then tighten screws a little at a time so the glass does not cock and crack.
- Restore power and look for rocking. A rocking cover will buzz.

Can I leave the fixture up and only change the glass while the switch is off?
Use the breaker. A switch can be on a different leg than the one you think, and a cracked cover puts your hand next to the socket.
Updated 8 October 2026. Turn the breaker off before you remove a ceiling shade.
